Vessel surgery

Vessel surgery (derives from the Latin: vas = pot = artery) is a branch of the surgery and deals with surgical care of veins and arteries.

The most commonly known vein surgery is the removal of varicose veins, the ovariectomy.

The oldest approved method is also called “vein stripping” and means the removal of the stam veins (“Magna” or “Parva”) through little cuts in the skin.

The development of surgical methods has well advanced by this time. Today the stripping can be increasingly abandoned and the aim is a permanent closure of the vein by e.g. laser energy. That way the injuring back flow in the varicose veins can be prevented. The vein remains in the body when these methods are used. You can find more about these methods here.

But there are not only new developments in vein surgery.

Not long ago the vessel surgeon was only in demand when non-surgical (conservative) methods did not help anymore. Today the vessel surgery is able to improve the walking distance or the posture of the legs without any surgical procedures right away. About these methods, e.g. angioplasty (balloon expansion) you will find more details on our webpage.

You see even though a vessel surgeon examines you and does the diagnosis this does not mean that surgical procedure will follow. The sum of the vessel medicine that we can offer includes a variety of treatment methods.

The vessel surgeon is also the one who looks after you and does check-up examinations after you have had bypass surgery (e.g. on the leg) or after scraping the carotid artery or after the treatment of an aneurysm (enlargement of the abdominal artery or other vessels).
