Diabetology is a medical field that deals with the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

What does a doctor´s office with the focus on cardiovascular diseases have to do with diabetes mellitus?

Patients with diabetes mellitus are affected with cardiovascular diseases more often that the average population. Diabetics have a two to four times higher risk for a cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes. From the beginning on, diabetes is a debilitating and eventually a life threatening disease. According to epidemiological studies, 75% of all diabetics die because of a vessel disease, of these 50% of an acute myocardial infarction.

To optimize the treatment patients receive, an interdisciplinary view and cooperation of diabetologists, angiologists and cardiologists is mandatory. A diabetological qualification of vessel physicians is also necessary.
