Cardiology

Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with diseases of the cardiovascular system. Cardiology is practiced by medical specialists for cardiology, who are called cardiologists.

Just like other medical branches the dissociation from other medical fields especially the angiology and the pneumology is not always well-defined. The cardiac surgery and the vessel surgery are part of the surgery and do not belong to cardiology. However, the cardiologist is frequently the transferring doctor and is often integrated into planning the therapy.

The sphere of action of a cardiologist is very multilateral. It ranges from routine diagnosis (ergometry, prolonged ECG) to specialized diagnosis (transesophageal echocardiography, left heart catheterization) and the pharmacotherapy to interventional therapies like the PCTA or cardiac pacemaker therapy.
