Starbust varices

Starbust varices are visible expansions of small blood vessels, mainly at the legs, that can have a red to a dark blue colour and can have various sizes. They occur when there is a weakness of the connective tissue that can be inherited or promoted by factors like being overweight, lack of exercise, or an occupation that requires standing.

Symptoms

Starbust varices are not usually painful. If they are a bigger area and rigidly supported they might seem to be unpleasant or overly heated. Large, rigidly supported starbust varices might burst at a higher age and cause small hemorrhages. Mainly people consider starbust varices as aesthetically unbeautiful and disturbing.

Diagnosis

Even though there are “only” starbust varices visible at the legs there have to be measurements and ultra-sound examinations performed by modern standards to preclude a medically meaningful sickening of varicose veins. Often many starbust varices (especially in the region of the ankle) indicate a dangerous varicose vein that needs to be treated with a laser or needs to be removed.

Therapy

There are many different methods to remove starbust varices that are more or less successful. Good results can be produced by treatments with the laser or by atrophy. With the laser the starbust varices are braised by the heat of the laser. By atrophy (sclerosing) they are caulked with a brought in substance. During the examination the doctor and the patient can decide for the suited treatment or a combination of it. Both treatments cause a “prickle” at the treated spot. There will not be any medical damage.

Starbust varices that are removed this way do not appear again. But the tendency to develop starbust varices at other spots can not be removed from the patient. After atrophy, the patient gets a compression bandage for one day that the patient can remove again by himself. In rare cases elastic stockings need to be worn for a couple days. An after-care after a laser treatment is not necessary. The costs for the removal of starbust varices by laser or atrophy are often not covered by the health insurance.
